Lithium-ion-polymer (LiPo) packets are the successors of well-known lithium-ion (LiIon) packets. The main advantage of LiPo batteries lies in the capacity to size ratio. They are very compact, while retaining impressive voltage capacity, which makes them suitable to almost every type of AEG airsoft gun. They’re not equipped with the memory effect. They can be charged frequently, without previous discharging. In fact, frequent charging is beneficial for this type of battery.
The user must keep in mind that a LiPo packet cannot be discharged to below 3V per cell and overcharged above 4,2V per cell. Another advantage of LiPo batteries I the small percentage level of self-discharge. An unused packet will lose 3-5% of energy per month. The packet needs to be regularly inspected, as during a prolonged period of storage it might discharge below the minimum value (3V per cell), which might lead to irreversible chemical damages, decreasing its capabilities and - in extreme cases- ignition. An unused LiPo packet should be charged to an average level of 70%.
Used properly, the life expectancy of LiPo batteries amounts to approximately 500-700 cycles. Temperature is an important factor, influencing their operation. In contrast to other battery types, LiPo batteries perform well in low temperatures. However, they should be charged in room temperature. To maintain LiPo batteries in good condition, they should be balanced during charging, using the factory pin, attached to most LiPo packets (a good-quality LiPo charger has an in-built balancer).
